Sustainability is a core measure of Mayr-Melnhof Packaging's business activities. We process predominantly renewable raw materials in order to protect resources, and we deploy state-of-the-art high-performance technology in order to make our production environment- and climate-compatible. We are continually implementing the latest standards at all our locations.

Our business conduct is based on the principles of respectable tradesmen and is focused on the long term. This is how we maintain our competitiveness and meet our responsibility as market leader and as employer. Ecology

Sustainable packaging with cartonboard

As the packaging material with the smallest CO2 footprint, cartonboard is an ‘eco-smart’ product. In order to continue to advance the environmental performance of our products, we constantly monitor the ecological effects of our activities and check the potential influence of new manufacturing and recycling processes.

Life cycle
Cartonboard is a natural material made from renewable materials and guarantees a closed, sustainable production cycle since it can be recycled.

Recycling and composting
Used cartonboard packages offer many benefits. They form the basis for the production of recycled cartonboard. Cartonboard fibres can be recycled up to seven times. At the end of its life cycle, composted cartonboard becomes an important source of energy.

Carbon footprint
Cartonboard is the packaging material with the smallest greenhouse gas footprint. Cartonboard production also leads the way in the use of renewable energy. For example, the CO2 footprint of the cartonboard and folding carton industry in Europe decreased by 5 percent between 2008 and 2011. This is the result of continuous improvement measures at all stages of production, from the use of raw materials and energy to waste reduction.

Sustainable forestry
Forestry protection is climate protection. A central factor in the environmental friendliness of folding cartons produced in Europe is that the raw material – wood – is sourced from sustainably managed forests. These are far more than just a renewable resource since newly planted trees exceed felled trees each year by an area of 1.5 million football pitches.

Our growth path is globally aligned. We concentrate on the effects of scale by deploying high-performance technology as well as continuously establishing best practices.

Organisational Structure
As one of two operational divisions of the Mayr-Melnhof Group, Mayr-Melnhof Packaging has 37 production locations on three continents. Our approximately 7,400 employees generate annual sales of over EUR 1.39 billion.
Like its sister division MM Packaging, Mayr-Melnhof Karton's management bears responsibility for its results. Business dealings between the two divisions are conducted on the profit centre principle.

Owner Structure
Mayr-Melnhof has been in existence for over 100 years. The shareholder structure of Mayr-Melnhof Group, which has been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1994, is characterized by a high level of continuity. Around 60 percent of the shares are held by the core shareholder families, while 40 percent are primarily held by institutional investors.
